One topic that’s recurring in most of my articles is meditation. In my book it is one of the most underrated Christian practices, yet it’s one of the most rewarding, if not the most rewarding.
By definition, meditation is a practice where an individual trains the mind (Wikipedia). In my previous post I spoke about Donté Drumm, a character from a novel. What I didn’t tell you is that when I first read the name I read it as D-o-nté and not D-a-nté. Not out loud of course lol. Immediately something told me I was doing this wrong. So I made a mental note to pronounce it right the next time. But I repeated the same mistake over and over. I mean the O was starring me right in the face and at the same time, the ‘something’ kept telling me it’s D-a-nté! Again I kept making the mental note to get it right next time.
This kept happening over and over until I was almost halfway through the book. Now, Donté is one of the main characters in the story so you can imagine how many times I got his name wrong and corrected myself. Hey! Don’t you dare think I’m a blockhead, it’s not a common name in these parts lol. I surprised myself when I was just a little past the halfway mark because I was no longer correcting myself. I was getting it right without even trying. Progress!!
Scripture says our citizenship is in heaven so before long I was connecting the dots between this little experience and our heavenly way of life. When we got born again, our spirits were recreated but our minds didn’t experience the same privilege. Our spirits were born into a new way of life in Christ but our minds came into this life in Christ with their old ways and bad habits. That is why Holy Spirit instructs us, through Paul, to be transformed in our minds. Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you] Rom.12:2 (AMPC). This mind overhaul can only be possible through meditation.Meditation is exposing your mind to the Word of God with the purpose of doing what it says. Click To Tweet
Meditation is the reason God instructed the Levites to always recite the law to the children of Israel. He was trying to control the information that their minds were exposed to, because that’s what makes one a success or failure in life. With Joshua He had to spell this out plainly; tell him exactly that only through meditation on the Word was he to attain good success.
This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success.
Joshua 1:8 (AMPC)
I’ve written about meditation before, in this post I want us to focus on the underlined part there. It says that you may observe and do all that is written in it. The Hebrew word translated to observe and do there is Shamar, literally it means to watch for the purpose of doing, hearing in order to do or copying to do. When you begin to shamar to God like this He not only shows or tells you what to do. He’ll give you the inspiration to do, He’ll propel you to do. You’ll be motivated to do what He wants. This brings Philippians 2:13 to mind, “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” Can you see why life with God is the simplest way to live? The only way really.
When you begin to do this, if you’re not a master at it already, you may stumble and stagger, your mind may still revert back to the old ways leading you to act wrong, don’t look at that. Keep one thought in your mind, “Good success is the goal and I won’t stop till I get it.” Being renewed in your mind is a process, it takes time but if you stick with it you’ll reap.
I remember when I started developing this habit back in 2015, I would see amazing pictures of myself. Too good to be true visions of who I am and how God sees me. I was seeing myself through God’s eyes. You’d think after seeing such magnificent pictures of myself I’d never go back to my old ways, but no! I would go right back. Just like I was doing with Donté lol.
I couldn’t understand why I was such a hopeless case. I look back now to October 2015 and one thing is obvious, I’m a result of the work that started in those days. I find myself doing things I never thought I’d ever do for God. And I can’t take credit, it’s all His show. All this to say; don’t be discouraged if or when you stumble, keep on meditating, it’ll lead you to shemar and before you even realise it success will be your middle name!
Any good, excellent or commendable thing you see in me today, God started engraving in me through meditation. I still meditate to this day because (i) there is still a lot to Shemar from God and (ii) God said His work in us will only be brought to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
Avail yourself to God in meditation and watch Him bring out the excellent success in you.
